Arif Chowdhury, TECNO Mobile Vice President
TECNO Mobile is a brand that needs no introduction in the African continent. The company has grown to become a household name as their popularity continues to grow in the continent. The company’s smartphones generate hundreds of thousands of Google searches once it’s released in countries like Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana.
According to Brand Africa, TECNO is now one of Africa’s most admired brands across different categories. This was revealed in a documentary released by Brand Africa. Last year, it was reported that TECNO ranked 14th on the most admired brand overall in the African continent. However, that has changed as the company now sits at 7th this year, taking over top brands like Google, Huawei and Nokia.
This isn’t surprising though, TECNO has made a name for itself these past couples of years in the continent. From feature phones to dual SIM enabled Android devices and affordable smartphones with trending features. The company is really taking it one step at a time. TECNO climbed up the ladder in the electronics and computers category, sitting in the 3rd position, only behind Samsung and Apple respectively.
TECNO Becomes One of Africa’s Most Admired Brands
TECNO has been doing everything possible for their visibility internationally as well. By releasing smartphones in Asia and signing a partnership with English football club, Manchester City. Other brands that were admired by Africans includes Google which was ranked first in the Media category. It was closely followed by DStv and Facebook respectively. While in the Telecommunications category, MTN was loved more than any other brands, followed by Airtel.

African Brands or Foreign Brands in Africa

This year’s report revealed that African Brands are definitely on the rise and are being admired more on the continent. Nigeria’s Dangote cement and Glo Mobile take the crown as the most admired African brands respectively. South Africa’s MTN and Shoprite filled up the 3rd and 4th position. While Kenya’s Tusker and Ethiopia’s Anbessa, a shoe manufacturing company, complete the top 6. The top 20 most admired African brands are mostly South African or Nigerian, with 3 being from Kenya.
