” And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?” - Ruth 1:20, 21.

Comment:
Death is the worst affliction the devil could use to torment people. In the case of Naomi, she lost her husband, Elimelech and her two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, in the land of Moab, to which they had emigrated because there was no food in their country, Bethlehem-Judah. To make matters worse, her two sons, though married, died childless. Naomi was left with two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah. All this happened within ten years of their stay in the land of Moab. The string of deaths in addition to the famine that made them to migrate to Moab could have made some to lose their faith, but Naomi remained steadfast. When she returned to Bethlehem, God made it possible for Ruth, her daughter-in-law that returned to Israel with her, to come in contact with Boaz, her late husband's kinsman, whom she eventually married. Their son, Obed, was 'the father of Jesse, who was the father of David”. (Ruth 1-4) It could be seen that although things were very gloomy for Naomi at the beginning, the future turned out to be very bright. The faithful, know that in the favour of God is life. “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning”. (Psalm 30:5) David the prophet also stated, “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” - Psalm 126:5, 6.
